This fascinating ABC book was originally published circa 1864 by the Fall-River, Massachusetts Lithographic Company. Each letter of the alphabet is depicted by a male figure in the costume of his nation, with such familiar countrymen as a Brazilian, a Greek, and a Russian. Of historic interest are bygone nationalities including the Circassian (resident of the largest mountain country Circassia in the Caucasus), the Lombard (of Lombardy in Northern Italy, prior to the unification of that country), and the Wirtembergian (of Wirtemberg, a principal southern state of Germany at the time).
